The holidays are a time of year that many regularly “non-theater” people gather in groups and head to see the holiday classics. Perhaps it’s because this time of year spurs togetherness, possibly due to the increased free time during holiday vacations, or blame it on the Nutcracker if you must. While many see pieces filled with holiday cheer, there are plenty of grin-and-bear it folks who accompany their loved ones dragging their heels. If you fall into the latter group, San Diego REPertory Theatre’s debut of “The Seafarer” may just be your ticket to mutual entertainment.
While a drunken game of poker by some Irishmen isn’t typical holiday fare – at least not on stage – San Diego REPertory Theatre’s production of “The Seafarer” is sure to please both theater-buffs, who will love the elite team of actors effortlessly executing this change of pace, and feet-dragging theater-newcomers, who will undoubtedly leave the venue pleasantly surprised.
And while it’s true the devil does make an appearance, we promise you won’t feel like you’re in hell. In fact, as the economy and the world struggle to pick themselves up by their boot straps, “The Seafarer” – with its themes of friendship and redemption – might be just what tops everyone’s holiday wish-list this year.
