Tired of Tinsel? Un-Holiday Your Holiday with “The Seafarer”

The holidays are a time of year that many regularly “non-theater” people gather in groups and head to see the holiday classics.  Perhaps it’s because this time of year spurs togetherness, possibly due to the increased free time during holiday vacations, or blame it on the Nutcracker if you must.  While many see pieces filled with holiday cheer, there are plenty of grin-and-bear it folks who accompany their loved ones dragging their heels.  If you fall into the latter group, San Diego REPertory Theatre’s debut of “The Seafarer” may just be your ticket to mutual entertainment.

While a drunken game of poker by some Irishmen isn’t typical holiday fare – at least not on stage – San Diego REPertory Theatre’s production of “The Seafarer” is sure to please both  theater-buffs, who will love the elite team of actors effortlessly executing this change of pace, and feet-dragging theater-newcomers, who will undoubtedly leave the venue pleasantly surprised.

And while it’s true the devil does make an appearance, we promise you won’t feel like you’re in hell.  In fact, as the economy and the world struggle to pick themselves up by their boot straps, “The Seafarer” – with its themes of friendship and redemption – might be just what tops everyone’s holiday wish-list this year. Cast of Characters – Robert J. Townsend of “The Seafarer”

Contrary to what a weekend night spent people-watching in the Gaslamp District might lead you to believe, it takes amazing talent to successfully act overly imbibed. The ensemble who will gather around the poker table and engage in dramatic, comedic dialogue for “The Seafarer” at the San Diego REPertory Theatre is a diversely accomplished one that is sure to appeal to a wide array of audiences.

Robert J. Townsend is one of the gentlemen playing his hand and sharing insight into his world in San Diego REPertory Theatre’s “The Seafarer.”  Prior to joining this cast, Robert has in his history quite a list of roles, sure to impress.  He spent time at the Starlight Theater as Joe Hardy in “Damn Yankees,” and played Anthony in “Sweeney Todd.”

Additionally, he toured in  “Grease” and played  musical theatre favorites such as  Billy Crocker in “Anything Goes”; Man #1 in “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”; Freddy in “My Fair Lady”; and Curly in “Oklahoma!”.

Also not to be overlooked, Robert was awarded a Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Leading Actor in the lead of “Jekyll and Hyde.”  Don’t miss this accomplished, young Southern California theatre talent, one of the very accomplished cast of “The Seafarer.”
